Indigenous communities do not own land as a possession. They share it with all beings living on it and maintain relationships with them. Purely capitalist activities, on the other hand, appropriate the earth in a way that burdens ecosystems and causes suffering. In this webinar, we will address the question of what we can learn from indigenous worldviews so that care for the earth becomes the basis for peaceful coexistence.

What continuities are there with racism today? How can we meet each other – beyond exoticism and discrimination?

Die Kommunikation über Projekte der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit ist sehr wichtig. Denn es geht nicht nur darum, diese finanziell zu unterstützen, sondern auch möglichst gut über sie kommunizieren. Das heisst, Texte auf Augenhöhe zu formulieren oder keine potenziell rassistischen Bilder auswählen. Wie das geht? Darüber spricht am Workshop der Zürcher Johanneskirche Claudia Buess, Leiterin Bildungsveranstaltungen von Mission 21.
Der Workshop ist offen für alle, die sich für das Thema interessieren.

Bereits zur Gründungszeit der Basler Mission 1815 spielte die Schweiz eine bedeutende Rolle im internationalen Transithandel mit Rohstoffen und Waren aus Übersee. 1859 stieg auch die Mission mit einer eigenen Handelsgesellschaft ins internationale Rohstoffgeschäft ein. Im Gespräch erläutert die Historikerin Lea Haller die Mechanismen des Welthandels während und nach dem europäischen Imperialismus. Wie war die Missionshandelsgesellschaft – damals eine der grössten Schweizer Handelsfirmen – am Schweizer Kolonialhandel beteiligt?

Mission wollte Frieden bringen. Und doch war sie in gewaltsame koloniale Konflikte verwickelt, wie der renommierte Missionshistoriker Prof. Ulrich van der Heyden anhand des Burenkriegs (1899 – 1902) in Südafrika aufzeigt. Die Berliner Missionare waren sowohl in den Kolonialarmeen aktiv als auch als Anwälte der afrikanischen Missionsgemeinden. Der Vortrag und die anschliessende Diskussion erläutern die Hintergründe dieser Doppelrolle. Inwiefern sich Basler Missionare an Kolonialkriegen beteiligten, wird auch zur Sprache kommen.

Dialog International Online: Nigeria – Interfaith conflict or climate war?
Nigerian peacebuilding experts directly involved in bridging the different ethnic and religious divides will share their experiences and insights on how to deal with the effects of the violence, restore justice and build sustainable peace. This online event is organized by Mission 21 and takes place on 21 October 2021.

We will discuss with experts from four continents what we can learn from history in order to deal with racism and discrimination today.
